Professor Juan Carlos Claudio

Juan Carlos Claudio was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, and currently holds the position of Assistant Professor/Lecturer in dance at The University of Utah. Currently, he teaches all levels of Modern Dance Technique, Theory and Practice, Dance in Culture, Dance and Community, Dance Composition and choreographs for the Performing Dance Company and dance companies throughout Utah. In 2009, Juan Carlos was awarded the Dee Winterton Award for mentoring and the University of Utah Student Teaching Choice Award for excellence in teaching. From 1996-2001 and again from 2002-2006, Juan Carlos danced as a full time company member for the highly renowned Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company and traveled throughout the world. In 2007, Juan Carlos won his first choreographic competition A.W.A.R.D. and from there he went on to present his own choreographic and collaboration works at the Harare International Arts Festival (2008) in Zimbabwe, OPEN LOOK- International Dance Festival (2009) in St. Petersburg, Russia and Utah State University– Diversity Week (2010) in Logan, Utah.In July of 2013, Juan Carlos represented the University of Utah, Department of Modern Dance and the USA as the featured contemporary dance teacher at the 2nd Choreography Competition, and the 1st Beijing Dance Academy summer workshop in Beijing, China. HeIn 2012, Juan Carlos led University of Utah’s partnership with Movement Exchange. He is a firm promoter of the significance the role of dance plays in the education of the “whole man”.
