Why did you join Movement Exchange?
I randomly received an email about Movement Exchange the fall of my sophomore year; I immediately loved the idea of it and knew I had to be a part of this amazing organization. I went on my first exchange in Spring 2014 with a fellow FSU student and we fell in love with Movement Exchange. We left Panama feeling inspired and knew we needed to create a chapter at FSU so fellow students like ourselves could experience all that the organization has to offer. This organization is truly unique and we wanted to spread our love of dance and inspire others to move to change!
How can dance change the world?
We asked our members the question “Why dance?” and these were our responses:
We dance because…
It brings confidence, joy, and artistic expression.
We can express who we are in ways words cannot.
It brings people together.
It feels good.
It relieves stress.
It’s our passion.
And most importantly, it makes us happy.
At FSU, we believe that dance is a way to empower ourselves and those around us. It’s an outlet for personal expression and creativity that can diffuse into the rest of our lives. Dance can inspire the world to be a creative, accepting, confident, and overall, happier place.
What is your favorite thing about Movement Exchange?
The best part of Movement Exchange is how much it challenges you to be a better person. It has taught me so much about confidence, leadership, inspiration, and self-worth and the beautiful part about this is that it has done all of this through something that I have been doing my entire life: dance. By going on the exchange to Panama and by inspiring others to dance, I feel as though I’m really witnessing the power of pure movement, which has completely changed my outlook on dance. Movement has the ability to bring joy and happiness to any situation and although I have been dancing for 17+ years, I don’t think I ever really knew how powerful it could be. Movement Exchange has made me so much more confident in myself and has given me even a greater sense of passion.
What makes the FSU chapter of Movement Exchange unique?
While committed to uniting dance and community service in the greater Tallahassee community, our chapter at FSU also strives to bring dance to our fellow students. We hold volunteer events for children in the area who may not have access to dance education, but also realize that our general FSU population may also not have access to dance education. One of our goals as an organization is to offer free dance classes open to all levels. We hope to bring dance to students who may not be able to afford or commit to a weekly dance class at a local studio. We hope to continue to spread the joy of dance across our campus.
